Independence Day: Chemistry binge watching – 10 household molecular compounds

Vee continues to binge watch the Nile Blue YouTuber https://www.youtube.com/@NileBlue

She reviewed all the chemical compounds she has learned to date while using her Einstein chemistry set from Amazon.

  1. H₂O is water – 2 molecules of hydrogen and 1 molecule of oxygen. Why does mixing two molecules that are normally gaseous result in water that is liquid at room temperature?
  2. H2O2 is Hydrogen Peroxide. In the past, it was used to clean wounds and bleach hair but now it’s more popular as a household cleaner. It’s often used in mouthwash. Two molecules of hydrogen and two molecules of oxygen.
  3. NaCl Sodium Chloride is table salt. One molecule of sodium and one molecule of chloride. Why is the abbreviation for Sodium Na? Most other items on the periodic table are related to the first letter of the English word. The University of Saskatchewan says: The symbol comes from the word Natrium (Latin) for Sodium Carbonate.
  4. CO is Carbon Dioxide which is what we breath out. One molecule of carbon and two molecules of oxygen. At night, in a closed bedroom with 2 or more people and pet(s), carbon dioxide can build up. Venting is a good idea. While not deadly, carbon dioxide can cause a foggy brain.
  5. C3H6O or CH₃ COCH₃ is Acetone aka is nail polish remover. six atoms of hydrogen, three atoms of carbon, and one atom of oxygen. Two methyl groups are attached to the middle carbon atom in the atoms of the acetone compound.
  6. NaHCO₃ Sodium Bicarbonate is Baking Soda. One molecule of Sodium. One molecule of Hydrogen. One molecule of Carbon. Three molecules of Oxygen. Why is it called Bi(meaning 2 like bicycle or bilingual or bicep) carbonate when it only has one molecule of carbon?
  7. CaCO3 Calcium Carbonate is chalk. One molecule of Calcium (that is a main ingredient in bones and milk), one molecule of carbon and three molecules of oxygen. Egg shells are also made of calcium carbonate. Can we make chalk from egg shells?
  8. CaO Calcium Oxide is lime, a white soil conditioner. It is what Vee’s grandma uses to make her garden grow so well. One molecule of calcium and one molecule of oxygen. The internet says it “Glows when heated.” We need to test it.
  9. SiO2 Silicon Dioxide is sand. One molecule of silicon and two molecules of oxygen.
  10. C12 H22 O11 is sucrose or sugar. 12 molecules of carbon, 22 molecules of hydrogen and 11 molecules of oxygen.
